Taking Care of Our Teeth

Jackson has really started to enjoy brushing his teeth. It is adorable! He will climb up on the stool in the bathroom, grab a toothbrush (the one closest to him...sometimes Rivers' brush!), and move his hand fast like we do. Keeping his teeth clean won't be quite the battle that it was with Rivers when she was 20 months old!

Speaking of battle, Rivers wrestled the giant caterpillar in Dr. Nieders reception area as she waited to be seen for her first dental appointment.

Rivers' hygienist, Gina, was so sweet and patient. She let Rivers sit up for her dental cleaning because she was a little bit worried about laying back in the big blue chair. Rivers chose to have raspberry and bubble gum toothpaste, but decided that she liked the raspberry flavor the best. When Dr. Nieders came in for the exam, she got a little scared, but he was so sweet and funny that he immediately put her at ease. Rivers went back for some fillings this week. Dr. Nieders did such a great job handling her and being sensitive to how many medical encounters she has already had. Of course, she was sedated for the appointment, which helped. He kept me very informed before, during, and after the appointment. Dr. Nieders left her a message the following day to check on her. She was so excited! She said,"Dr. Nieders! Oh my goodness!" This has definitely helped pave the way for a good dental experience!

I'm sure we'll be returning in the next few months because of a fall that Rivers had while in Hilton Head. Our very first night, she fell in Blockbuster and hit some CD racks that were hidden beneath a skirted table. When she looked up, there was blood pouring out of her mouth and her front tooth was sticking straight out. I gently pushed it back in, and we saw a pediatric dentist that evening, but the damage has already been done. A few of her teeth are beginning to turn grey. She may need "baby root canals" or even a bridge. Yet another thing to get fixed, but I know that it could be worse!
